A Foodies Guide to the Best Restaurants & Cheap Eats in Bondi Beach, Australia

Sydney is a bustling metropolitan city hosting stunning beaches, a vibrant food scene and some of Australia’s most well-recognised landmarks. No trip to Australia would be complete without taking a visit to one of its most popular spots, Bondi Beach. Bondi sits nested within the centre of the predominantly residential Eastern Suburbs and is a unique blend of tourists, international working visitors and local families bringing with it a buzz and plenty of exciting restaurants to choose from. I lived in Bondi for a year so really did get to try and taste all the best food spots worth a visit.

Breakfast/Lunch

The Depot - Pancakes but not quite as you know it. The Depot serve up a large portion of light and fluffy calzone-style pancake served with coconut yoghurt and a berry compote that you won't need to eat for the rest of the day. Again another busy spot but well worth the wait as The Depot has something for the whole family.

Good One - Something unique about the brunch menu here are their 'Good Time Bowls'. Full of healthy greens you can pick your bowl and add on anything you wish from the extras to make it your own - you can't go wrong.

Lock Stock and Barrel - Lock Stock is a bit cooler than over-the-top Speedos or influencer-attracting Bills. A few streets away from the beach this brunch spot has a more local feel than the options available nearer the main promenade.

Harrys - Next to Raw Bar you will find Harrys serving up all your favourite brunch dishes with a spacious indoor area and seating available outside this is the perfect spot for large groups and families.

Speedos - The dishes are Speedos are playful and vibrant with towering rainbow pancakes, bubblegum lattes and blue smoothie bowls complete with edible shells and a beach umbrella. This is a touristy spot but definitely the place to go for a fun occasion with views over the beach, plus if you go on your birthday with ID you eat for free!

Dairy - The best cookie you will ever eat. I shall just leave it at that.

Lunch/Dinner

Taqiza - A small, and I mean really small, Mexican that does the best spicy margarita around. I recommend ordering a few rounds of margs and a bunch of tacos to share. My personal favourites are Barramundi, Vegan Chorizo and fried cheese.

Raw Bar - Head towards North Bondi and near the beach, you'll find Bondi's best sushi bar. Always full and you are unable to book so I suggest getting there early or just be prepared to wait. We usually went for a mix of the specials menu which is seasonal, the signature rolls and a miso soup washed down with a Coconut and Mandarin Margarita.

Totti's - A firm Instagram favourite Tottis is like stepping into a courtyard in Tuscany. The menu is Italian-style tapas with a selection of pasta dishes to choose from so it's a great place to bring a group of friends so you can work your way through the menu.

Milky Lane - The number one place to go if you want to overindulge. Milky Lane is known for its freakshakes, over-the-top burgers and loaded fries; this place tends to pack out during the day with tourists staying in the CBD but is pretty chill in the evening.

Bills - Time spent in Bondi, or Australia, wouldn't be complete without several brunches. With mid-century modern interiors and a popular spot for Sydney influencers Bills has your classic Aussie menu with fresh and unique ingredients that make it one of the best places around. I would recommend the tea-smoked salmon and a Matcha latte.

Soy Japanese - A great alternative sushi spot if you are looking for somewhere a little cheaper than Raw Bar and a great take-away option. It has all your usual sashimi plates, tempura bits and maki rolls with eat-in and takeaway options.

Takeaway

Fish Bowl - They operate out of a few spots around town but are a great picnic on the beach idea when around Bondi. A large range of Poki Bowls, also suitable for vegans or veggies, that are super tasty and for Sydney pretty budget-friendly.

Fish Mongers – If you get fish and chips anywhere in Sydney make it Fish Mongers. Always fresh with a big variety of salads, calamari, grilled or battered fish with a side of rock oysters. They do have some tables for eating in but are mainly take-away.

Dough Boys - My go-to spot for takeaway pizza Dough Boys always delivers with all the classics and a few unusual topping combinations thrown in. We always went for the chilli prawn, veggie Lola and a Bundaberg ginger beer.

Anitas Icecream - You can’t take a trip to the beach without an afternoon ice cream and Aniatas is the place to go for the best variety of flavours with that high-quality homemade feel.

Drinks

Mama Saan - The ideal place to start the weekend with some live music and a cocktail. The food is Asian fusion with darkly lit cosy corners, quirky interiors and bottomless lunches available.

Hotel Ravesis - One of the few hotels in Bondi Hotel Ravesis can get pretty lively if you stick around past dinner. There is bar and dining seating available which is the same as upstairs with the addition of a fairy-light-lit balcony overlooking the promenade and beach.

North Bondi RSL Club - The best place to go for a relaxed drink with a view of the beach. The RSL was set up in 1916 as a members club to support veterans and their families but also welcome nonmembers across Australia. Their menu has a pub feel to it and is generally a great place for a cheap eat and a beer.

I’m new to the world of travel blogging with more posts coming soon. In the meantime get to know me!
